Coach Mike McLean is beginning his first season coaching cross country and distance track at Rocky Mountain College. McLean has coached for over 30 years in the Flathead Valley of northwest Montana. For 24 years, he coached the Highlanders track and field program and also coached for four years as an assistant cross country coach at Columbia Falls High School. McLean helped restart the Flathead Valley Community College cross country team in 1996, and he has spent the past eight years coaching cross country and distance track at Glacier High School. In 2013 and 2014, the Glacier boys won the Mountain West XC Classic, the largest cross country race in Montana, which also includes teams from Idaho, Wyoming, and Washington. Three of McLean's student-athletes were named All-State in cross country in 2014, and in the past three years, two Glacier cross country athletes have qualified for the Foot Locker Cross Country National Championships.

Coach McLean graduated from  Ridgefield  Park High School (NJ) and competed for Rowan University in cross country and indoor and outdoor track. He competed in races from 800 meters to 10,000 meters, including the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Coach McLean has run in hundreds of road races, track meets, and cross country races, including 13 marathons across the United States and Canada. He has worked at Flathead Valley Community College for the past 20 years and stresses academic success, previously having a team named Academic All-American First Team with a 3.84 GPA. Coach McLean believes running should be fun, but he is fiercely competitive and sets no limits for the student-athletes he coaches. His hobbies include most outdoor activities, including running, camping, hiking, fishing, gold mining, and spending time in Montana, Arizona, and Hawaii.

McLean's family includes his daughter, Ann Marie, and her husband, Alex, and sons Mark and Matthew.

Distance Coach, Eayoall Aklilu, brings with him a long list of accomplishments as a high school and collegiate runner. Aklilu still holds records in a few distances at Ridgeview High School in Bakersfield, California. Aklilu was named MVP both his Junior and Senior years of high school and he notably never lost a duel cross-country meet. He won the “Jacky Club” award five times in high school and was one of the first two men to qualify for the National NAIA Cross Country Race while at Rocky Mountain College. He went on to qualify in track for numerous events.

Aklilu, originally from Gara Muleta Harar, Ethiopia, also attended junior college in Bakersfield, California, before transferring to RMC in the fall of 2009. Aklilu graduated from RMC with his degree PE and a minor in Coaching. Aklilu – often called “Coach Yo” – is involved in numerous non-profit organizations in the community and is the founder of, a non-profit that raises money for educational projects in his home country of Ethiopia.
