The Open Door

Rocky Mountain College was once known as the "College of the Open Door" because it served as a poly technical institute that specialized in vocational training. The open door was for students from all walks of life who came to learn how to run printing presses, fix automobiles, and manage dairy farms. Now the open door has a different meaning. When the door opens from RMC to their next adventure, they are superbly prepared. They cross the threshold with high academic qualifications and leadership skills. They are so well prepared because one of the college's greatest assets, its living asset is the quality faculty and staff who assist them through their college journey. RMC has an above average percentage of faculty with doctorates and terminal degrees. And these are faculty who teach. We do not have teaching assistants handling that essential task. Our staff, from the admissions counselors to the mentors and tutors with the Services for Academic Success are committed professionals.

Faculty & Staff

  • Drummer in a rock and roll band.
  • Fire spotter at a national forest lookout.
  • Award winning photographer.

Professor Mark Moak and senior Haily work on some jewelry.

You might think that describes a student at Rocky Mountain College, but it really describes one of RMC's favorite professors.

Professor Mark Moak specializes in teaching art, with a focus on jewelry and metal work, and calligraphy and photography. His art history courses, especially Greek art, come alive because he also has worked for more than 25 years on Minoan excavations at Palaikastro, Crete.

But, Mark also loves music, which is why whenever he has time you'll find him.An award winning photo by professor Mark Moak. rocking out the beat to classic rock and blues with the band, Midlife Chryslers, comprised of four doctors and an athletic trainer. The Midlife Chryslers play primarily for charitable causes. "And because it's a lot of fun," Mark laughs.

In the summers he and his wife, Rhett, staff U.S. Forest Service lookout towers, where he keeps a wary watch for smoke and a keen interest in nature.

Don't expect tweedy, aloof professors at Rocky. Mark Moak isn't one of them.
And, he is also the faculty chair.
