PA program alumna shares lessons from thriving surgery practice
Stephanie [Ridgway] Hudson, who became a physician assistant in 2012 in the Rocky Mountain College Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) program, works in a general surgery practice as the first-ever PA among seven surgeons. Her coworkers say uniformly, "Why didn't we do this before [have a PA]? It's so much easier!" she said. Read more

'Go Bald' For Cancer Event Held in Memory of RMC Chaplain
Last February Rocky Mountain College Chaplain Kristi Foster organized what she called a "hair raising event" that resulted in dozens of people having their hair shorn during halftime of an RMC basketball game. Rev. Foster wanted "to raise awareness, raise support and raise money" to fight cancer. Dubbed "Go Bald," the event raised more than $6,000 for the American Cancer Society. Read more

Yellowstone River Clean Up When: Sat September 17th, 9:00am. We start at Duck Creek Bridge for the river float crew. Commencement 2011
Graduates of the Class of 2011 will hear from a Rocky Mountain College alumnus, who is an actor, mime, and educator, at the 129th Commencement, May 7, 2011. It will not be the first return visit to his alma mater for Bill Bowers, RMC'81. Lukas Seely was known as Lukas Keutla when he attended RMC from 2000 2004, graduating with a degree in business administration with a minor in theatre arts. RMC Hosts Presentation on Banned Books
If not for the American Library Association and the American Civil Liberties Union, a book that celebrated its 50th year as an American classic would have been banned in some city libraries in Minnesota, New York, Indiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia and Texas. "To Kill a Mockingbird" won the Pulitzer Prize, and still is a book that some seek to remove from public libraries, objecting to its subject matter: racial inequality, rape, and social injustice. "Myths, Folklore and Dreams" at Ryniker-Morrison
Barbara Morrison as an artist is informed by myths, folklore and dreams. Her gouache paintings, multimedia sculptures, hats, and masks all show those influences. Much of her art tells a story and incorporates fairy tales, folk and ethnic art. The human form is central to her work and she often juxtaposes the ancient idea of "doll as fetish" with the modern day "doll as toy." One way she achieves this is to offset the archaic body forms with intricate detail made from paint, cloth, paper or found objects. Read more

Chairs, Committee Named for RMC Scholarship Benefit
Plans for Rocky Mountain College's 23rd Annual Black Tie Blue Jeans Scholarship Benefit are forging ahead with "fantastic cooperation and participation from many friends of the College," said Vicki Davison, RMC director of alumni relations and special projects. The gala event, set for Friday, Nov. 5, 2010 at Billings Hotel & Convention Center, is co- chaired by RMC Board of Trustees Chris Dorr and Mary Underriner. The steering committee includes some familiar faces from past BTBJ events along with some new faces. RMC Student Chosen for Air Force Scholarship
Maggie Dutcher, a first-year student in the Rocky Mountain College Master's in Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) program was selected as the only civilian Physician Assistant student in this western region to be the recipient of an Air Force scholarship. She was selected out of a field of more than 200 applicants for the award. As a result, she was commissioned Wednesday, April 21, 2010, as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force's Medical Service Corps and was being sworn in by John Fields, a retired Air Force Physician Assistant and the Associate Director of the RMC-MPAS program. Following graduation from the RMC program next year, Maggie will be promoted to First Lieutenant and transferred to the Biomedical Sciences Corps where she will provide medical care as a Physician Assistant in the Air Force. Starkweathers Launched Endowment at RMC
Rocky Mountain College has established an endowment as a memorial to Dolores S. and Jack A. Starkweather and as a tribute to their support for the college's geology department. Dolores and Jack Starkweather were a popular and beloved couple in Montana, where Jack developed a formidable career as a petroleum engineer and oil and gas entrepreneur while Dolores was engaged with helping Billings Clinic, Senior Helping Hands and the American Lutheran Church. They were wonderful parents to two sons and a daughter. When Jack died in November of this year, six years after Dolores, his funeral was a tribute to the high regard the community had for both, according to Obert Undem, Rocky Mountain College director of planned giving. Brockton Students & Teachers Seek Books For Little Kids
This small -- population 250 -- community on the edge of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation suffers from its rural remoteness and a grinding poverty census statistics only hint at. With more than a third of the population below poverty income, with the average household income half the state average, and with double-digit unemployment, Brockton's schools struggle with the resources to educate a population desperately in need of learning. The presentation of "Almost, Maine" by the Rocky Mountain Theatre Arts Department has been selected from more than 50 plays performed by colleges in the Rocky Mountain Theatre Association to be presented at the regional "Festivention." According to Prof. Gerry Roe, who directed the RMC production, an RMTA adjudicator attended the show when it was presented in October. Rev. Knee Addresses Human Sexuality Debate
On Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, the Philosophy and Religious Thought Society of Rocky Mountain College will be hosting a talk by the Rev. Jacob Knee, Rector at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, on the the question of human sexuality, a topic which is currently being debated in the Anglican Communion in Father Knee's home country of England. RMC students collect 500 plus garments for homeless
More than 50 Rocky Mountain College students discarded their clothing Friday night as they ran across campus in frigid weather during the first annual "Undie Run." The event, organized by RMC's Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), was a partnership between SIFE and the Montana Rescue Mission to help focus attention of the problem of poverty and homelessness in Billings. RMC Hosts Fall Visit Day
Prospective students and their parents are welcome to attend Rocky Mountain College's Fall Visit Day, beginning at 9 a.m., Oct. 2, 2009. RMC student crowned Miss Montana USA
A Rocky Mountain College student, majoring in elementary education, was crowned 2010 Miss Montana USA at the MCT Center for Performing Arts, Sept. 6, 2009, according to Tonya King, Miss Montana USA Pageants executive director. Rocky Mountain College presents the exhibition, "Cloudscapes: 35 Drawings of Air," drawings by Corby Skinner, at the Ryniker-Morrison Gallery in Tech Hall, from September 23 through October 14, 2009. RMC prof helps cultivate free speech
Back from a summer in Sarajevo, Shelby Jo Long-Hammond still wakes up in the middle of the night with "Sniper Alley" on her mind. Even though the infamous killing zone is quiet 15 years after people were routinely gunned down during the siege that pitted ethnic groups against each other in bloody conflict, the echoes from that time made more poignant Long-Hammond's participation in the International Debate Education Association's (IDEA) youth forum in Bosnia and Herzogevenia. Brian Armstrong named Bears head football coach
Rocky Mountain College Head Football Coach Dave Reeves has submitted his resignation effective Aug. 1, 2009. Brian Armstrong has been named interim head coach, effective immediately. U.S. Senator Burns foundation presents gifts for education
From his earliest days as an elected public servant, and more pronouncedly when he was elected U.S. Senator, Conrad Burns has recognized how important education is to the future health of the country. A pioneer in trying to provide the best technological advances for Montana schoolchildren, Sen. Burns advanced distance learning centers, worked to make sure computers were in schools across Big Sky County, and was a constant proponent of accepting the challenges of change. RMC Flight Team fares well at Nationals
The Intercollegiate Flight Team at Rocky Mountain College competed recently at the National Competition of the National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) held in Cahokia, Ill. The event, hosted this year by Parks College of St. Louis University, was six-days long, and pitted the best 28 collegiate flight teams in the nation against each other. The invitation to nationals was Rocky's third in the past six years, considered an excellent showing by the small college. There is only one national competition for all collegiate aviation programs, regardless of size. Read more

The Physician Assistant students of Rocky Mountain College are organizing a Donate Life Today organ donation registration drive. It is part of the National Organ Donation month (April). Next week there will be a big push on college campuses around Montana to have people register as organ donors. Named human resource director
Jennifer R. McCollum has been named executive director of human resources at Rocky Mountain College. McCollum was employed for 12 years with Raymond Corcoran Trucking, Inc. and RB&C Grain, Inc., as their director of human resources and safety. A native of Billings, she graduated from Skyview High School and received her B.S. in human resource management from Arizona State University in 1995. McCollum is married and has three children. Baken wins Puffin Foundation grant
Jim Baken, Rocky Mountain College professor of fine arts, is a 2009 recipient of a Puffin Foundation grant. Baken's request was for framing existing work, art supplies and support of ongoing projects produced on the fire lookout tower in the Bitterroot National Forest where he and his family spend their summers. He also will support ongoing projects associated with Robert Ketchum's Prototopic Initiative, which received a 2008 Puffin award. Idaho Falls native named student employee of the year
Brittney Penberthy, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, maintains a better than 3.6 grade point average, is president of the chemistry club, serves as a student ambassador and tour guide for prospective students, and is active in student government. RMC to mark 100th anniversary of candlelight dinner
It was a dreary January day in 1910 when the students, staff and faculty gathered to share their first meal on the campus of Rocky Mountain College. They had spent the day loading their trunks and furniture onto hay wagons to move into the new buildings. Horses and humans labored in the slush and mud. That evening they gathered for their first meal on campus. The menu was sparse. Some cold meat, boiled potatoes, beans and doughnuts. There were not enough forks for everyone so they had a choice of a spoon or knife. The electricity was not working, so they ate on rough bare boards with candles flickering here and there. Read more
