Discover Your Path as a Physician Assistant in the Intermountain West
Choosing a Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) program is about more than a degree. It’s about where you will learn, who will mentor you, and the communities you will ultimately serve. At Rocky Mountain College, our MPAS program is built for students who want close faculty support, diverse clinical experiences, and the opportunity to make a lasting impact in rural and underserved areas.
Built Around Rural and Underserved Communities
Healthcare access in many parts of Montana and the intermountain West is limited. Small towns may be hours from the nearest specialist, and critical access hospitals rely heavily on physician assistants to meet patients’ needs.
Rocky Mountain College’s MPAS program is intentionally designed for this context.
- Regional Emphasis: We prioritize applicants from Montana and neighboring states and from rural communities within this region.
- Clinical Experiences in Smaller Communities: Many supervised clinical experiences take place in rural and frontier settings, where PAs play a central role in caring for individuals and families across the lifespan.
- Graduates Who Stay and Serve: A significant number of our alumni choose to remain in Montana or nearby states, working in small hospitals, clinics, and community practices.
“I work in a small hospital in Montana where specialty services are often several hundred miles away. I cover family practice, emergency medicine, and acute care—and I love that I’m not tied to one specialty. Rocky’s PA program prepared me to wear all those different hats.”
Sierra, MPAS ’22 – Physician Assistant, Montana
If you envision yourself providing care where it is needed most, Rocky offers a pathway to put that commitment into practice.
Broad Clinical Experiences That Open Doors
The MPAS program at Rocky Mountain College offers a wide range of supervised clinical experiences that expose you to different specialties, patient populations, and practice settings.
You can expect to:
Gain exposure to family medicine, internal medicine, emergency care, general surgery, pediatrics, women’s health, behavioral health, and additional specialties
Complete supervised experiences in both urban and rural locations, including critical access hospitals and community clinics
Work alongside physicians and experienced PAs who provide feedback on your clinical reasoning, procedures, and patient communication
See common conditions as well as more complex presentations that sharpen your diagnostic and management skills
Many students find that a clinical experience leads directly to their first position after graduation.
“During my second-year rotations, I worked with the gynecologic oncology group I’m with today. They kept telling me, ‘We really like you; you’re good at this—let us know if you’d ever want to work with us.’ It wasn’t guaranteed, but that rotation opened the door to my first PA position, and it’s been a really great first job.”
— Lauren, MPAS ’23 – Physician Assistant, Montana
A Strong Academic Foundation
The curriculum is designed to build a solid base in medical knowledge and clinical decision-making, then deepen and refine your skills through supervised clinical experiences.
- Comprehensive Didactic Coursework: Courses in anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and clinical medicine help you understand disease processes and treatment options.
- Integrated Clinical Skills: From history-taking and physical examination to documentation and patient counseling, you develop practical skills alongside the core sciences.
- An Emphasis on Application: Case-based learning, small-group discussions, and simulation experiences connect classroom concepts to patient care.
“Our anatomy and physiology courses—especially the cadaver lab—were incredibly valuable. I still draw on that foundation every day in orthopedic practice.”
— Denae, MPAS ’22 – Orthopedic PA, Montana
This combination of rigorous coursework and applied learning prepares you for the PANCE and for your first role as a PA.

A Pathway for Students from Rural Backgrounds
Many of our students grew up in small towns, served in the military, or worked in healthcare roles that brought them into close contact with rural and underserved populations. Rocky Mountain College offers an environment where that background is valued.
“I grew up in a small town in northeastern Montana, served over five years on active duty, and worked as a combat medic and EMT. When it came time to apply, Rocky’s PA program was the only place I wanted to be. I knew I wanted to come back to Montana and care for communities like the one I grew up in.”
— Sierra, MPAS ’22 – Physician Assistant, Montana
If you want to stay connected to your roots or return to serve communities like the one you came from, Rocky provides a clear path to get there.
