Biography

Dr. Steven Hart conducts choral ensembles, teaches conducting, vocal pedagogy and private voice.  He completed his Ph.D at the University of Colorado, his master's in music at the University of South Dakota, and his bachelor's of music at Western Michigan University.

Dr. Hart maintains an active schedule as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator.
He is the conductor and founder of the High Plains Chamber Singers, a 24-voice ensemble dedicated to the highest standards of the choral art.  The ensemble performs music from the rich history of choral singing from chant to new compositions both accompanied and a cappella.

Dr. Hart conducts the Billings Symphony Chorale, a 70-voice community ensemble that performs major choral/orchestral repertoire with the Billings Symphony.

Conference presentations include "Expanding Expressive Possibilities: Choral Style and Vocal Production," "Vocal Health for Conductors and Singers," "Brain Research: Implications for Music Educators," and "Warm-ups: A Time-sensitive Approach."

He was one of twelve conductors invited to participate in the Fifth Annual International Conducting Workshop in Varna, Bulgaria.  Dr. Hart continues to pursue his strong interest in the relationship of physical conducting gesture to the performer's musical response.  He has taught at Rocky Mountain College since Fall of 2000.

His sport activities include rock climbing, tennis, skiing, rollerblading and hiking in the mountains.
