Environmental Students Organize Recycling Effort

Recently, the RMC Environmental Science program, along with students and faculty from the Environmental Club, collaborated to organize a recycling initiative for old and unused items within the science building. This initiative was necessary due to ongoing upgrades to the heating and cooling systems in the building, which required access to an overcrowded storeroom. Overall, these students managed to divert more than 5,300 pounds of e-waste.

Over a few weeks, students and faculty worked together to clear out large metal items and furniture, transporting them to a metal recycling yard. Additionally, they removed three truckloads of old electronic science equipment. This action not only prevented toxic e-waste from entering the city landfill but also contributed metal back into the manufacturing process. The culmination of their efforts included a field trip to a metal scrap yard, where students observed a large magnet extracting metal from their trailers.
